Serious surfer Kyle Busey, 31, is always scouting waves off James Island and Folly Beach, South Carolina. His ocean paradise is not far from his businesses Carolina Salt Surf Lessons and Charleston Paddle Board Co., so Busey combines work and play as much as possible.

We caught up with the local athlete to see how he balances the surf and sweet life.
How did you first get into surfing?
My mom had an old board lying around after hurricane Hugo and some of my teammates from my other sports dabbled in surfing, so I kind of followed them.
What’s the scariest moment you’ve ever had on a board?
I’ve had many scary moments: anything from shark attacks to being held down for a long time on big waves. The consequences are real, but I tend to let whatever happens happen without getting worked up.
What does a “typical” day look like for you?
My typical day changes by the season. March through October my days completely consist of work—teaching in an on the water. After October I finally get to rest. I wake up after 7 a.m., spend time with my fiancée and dogs, and work on house projects that have piled up. I also like to work on new business ideas and travel for my own surfing.
What are you looking forward to in 2018?
I’m getting married in April! That's a big one. My businesses are growing at an astounding rate, which keeps me more than busy. I have a couple surf trips planned to try to get some pics and video for projects. I’m also finally implementing projects outside of the surf scene that I’ve been meaning to get to. I like to diversify myself in many aspects to ensure my life doesn't get stagnant.
Any routines for staying healthy and happy as an athlete?
I used to care 0% about health and fitness, although I’ve always been active and have generally eaten healthy. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized how important it is. I go to the gym (not as often as I should), and my fiancée tends to keep us eating well.
What do you do for fun outside of your core sport?
Unfortunately, real life and responsibilities get in the way the older you get. I still try to fill my life with positive people and activities. I enjoy getting in the boat, fishing and exploring surrounding islands. I also got into golf recently, and I like to build things and dabble in carpentry.
Favorite Nectar sunglass style?
The Dank or Blaze tend to be my go-to sunnies. The have a bigger/fuller frame for my big head. I wear them everywhere—that’s probably why I burn through them so fast!
